ARRESTED! Ex-Prince Andrew arrested by Police on 66th birthday, King Charles reacts

‘The Law Must Take Its Course’: Breaks Silence as Brother Andrew Is Arrested on Birthday

In an unprecedented turn of events that has sent shockwaves through the monarchy,  has issued a historic statement expressing his “deepest concern” following the arrest of his younger brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

The King explicitly stated that “the law must take its course” and pledged the Royal Family’s “wholehearted support and co-operation” with the police investigation .

Andrew, who turned 66 on Thursday, was taken into custody by Thames Valley Police during a morning raid on his temporary home, Wood Farm, on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.

He is the first senior British royal in modern history to be arrested .

The Arrest at Sandringham

In a meticulously planned operation, at least six unmarked police vehicles carrying around eight plain-clothes officers arrived at the remote Wood Farm cottage at approximately 8:00 AM on Thursday .

Onlookers reported that some officers were seen carrying police-issue laptops. A convoy of vehicles, including Land Rovers linked to Andrew, was later photographed leaving the estate .

Thames Valley Police confirmed at 10:08 AM that “a man in his sixties from Norfolk” had been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office and was in police custody .

While police declined to officially name the individual “as per national guidance,” the identity was widely confirmed by multiple news outlets, including the BBC .

In addition to the arrest, officers are conducting searches at two properties: Wood Farm in Norfolk and Andrew’s former residence, the 30-room Royal Lodge in Windsor .

The former prince was evicted from Royal Lodge—after a long-standing dispute over its upkeep—under the orders of late last year and moved to the more modest Wood Farm just weeks ago .

Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright of Thames Valley Police stated:

“Following a thorough assessment, we have now opened an investigation into this allegation of misconduct in public office.

“It is important that we protect the integrity and objectivity of our investigation as we work with our partners to investigate this alleged offence” .

The King’s Unprecedented Response

Just hours after the arrest, Buckingham Palace released a written statement from King Charles.

The King, who was not informed in advance of the police operation, addressed the situation head-on, making a clear distinction between his private family concerns and his public duty as sovereign .

The statement read in full:

“I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office.

What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities. In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation.

Let me state clearly: the law must take its course.

As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter. Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all.

Charles R.”

Royal insiders suggest the Prince and Princess of Wales fully support the King’s decisive statement .

Demonstrating his commitment to duty, the King was seen later on Thursday at St James’s Palace, conducting audiences with the ambassadors of El Salvador and Spain, and the High Commissioner for Kenya .

The Allegations: The Epstein Files and ‘Misconduct’

The arrest follows a review of millions of pages of documents released by the US Department of Justice, part of the ongoing fallout from the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.

Andrew has faced years of questions over his friendship with the convicted paedophile, who died in prison in 2019 .

The specific suspicion of misconduct in public office relates to Andrew’s time as the UK’s special representative for international trade and investment, a role he held from 2001 to 2011 .

Emails uncovered in the Epstein files suggest Andrew shared sensitive information with Epstein. Key allegations include:

Sharing Confidential Briefings: In December 2010, Andrew allegedly forwarded a confidential government briefing to Epstein regarding “high value commercial opportunities” in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, which included details on gold, uranium, and other mineral deposits .

Official Visit Reports: He is also accused of sharing reports of his official trade visits to countries like Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Singapore with the financier .

Financial Discussions: Other emails suggest discussions regarding the restructuring of the Royal Bank of Scotland and potential investment opportunities involving Aston Martin were relayed to Epstein .

Beyond the misconduct charge, Thames Valley Police is also reportedly reviewing a separate allegation that a woman was trafficked to the UK by Epstein for a sexual encounter with Andrew at Royal Lodge in 2010 .

Andrew has consistently and vehemently denied any wrongdoing regarding all allegations. He settled a civil lawsuit with Virginia Giuffre—who accused him of sexual assault when she was 17—in 2022 for an undisclosed sum, though the settlement included no admission of liability .

Reaction: ‘No One Is Above the Law’

The arrest has drawn a powerful response from the family of Virginia Giuffre, who died by suicide in April 2025.

Her siblings released a statement saying their “broken hearts have been lifted” by the news .

“At last, today, our broken hearts have been lifted at the news that no one is above the law, not even royalty,” the family told CBS News.

“On behalf of our sister, Virginia Roberts Giuffre, we extend our gratitude to the U.K.’s Thames Valley Police for their investigation, and the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

He was never a prince. For survivors everywhere, Virginia did this for you” .

Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown also revealed he has submitted a five-page memorandum to multiple police constabularies, providing “additional” information in the wake of the arrest .

The Fall from Grace

Andrew’s arrest marks the final step in a spectacular fall from grace. Once one of the monarchy’s most popular figures, his public reputation was destroyed by his friendship with Epstein and a disastrous 2019 BBC Newsnight interview about the allegations.

In a bid to distance the monarchy from the scandal, King Charles stripped Andrew of his “prince” title and his “Duke of York” dukedom late last year .

He was also forced to surrender the lease on Royal Lodge, his home for over two decades. The move was reportedly orchestrated by the King and the Prince of Wales, with Andrew being relocated under the cover of darkness earlier this month .

Andrew remains in the line of succession to the throne, though he now uses the surname Mountbatten-Windsor. As he spends his 66th birthday in police custody, the investigation continues, with multiple UK police forces assessing various aspects of the Epstein files.

The King has made it clear that while this is a matter of “deepest concern” for his family, the path forward is one of full cooperation with the legal process.
