As the years rolled on, the royal family and the public kept a close eye on him, especially in his later years.

Despite speculation suggesting that his travels might be limited due to age, the Palace clarified that these outings were not intended as final farewells.

In December 2011, however, a serious health scare struck when the 90-year-old Duke experienced chest pains at Sandringham while the family was preparing for Christmas.

His retirement from public duties in May 2017 wasn’t primarily driven by health fears but stemmed from a desire for a more leisurely lifestyle.

Intriguingly, just days after announcing his withdrawal, he was spotted enjoying carriage driving events at the Royal Windsor Horse Show, indicating a vibrant spirit.

As pandemic restrictions took hold in 2020, the Duke, along with the Queen, maintained a low profile during the lockdown, opting for a quiet Christmas away from the traditional gatherings.
